My New York - Coney Island

I went to Coney Island yesterday, thinking it would be therapeutic  for my nagging cough... the fresh salty air would clear me out, and the sound of the waves would warm my soul. In Manhattan it was sunny and the temperature was creeping up towards the 80s. I took the subway, which takes about an hour. Arriving to Coney Island the weather was windy, hazy and humid. No sun, and the water seemed to have the color of steel, as the waves were crashing in. It is okay, I still love the beach. I don't think there is any kind of weather that would make the beach unappealing to me.

Most people associate Coney Island with the amusement park. It is a New York landmark. I have to say some of the improvements they have implemented in the past two years, lack character. The vintage feel had a charm, but few landmarks were kept as is. One of them is the Wonder Wheel, -though with a new coat of several colors of paint-, and the other is the Cyclone, an old fashioned roller coaster.

Oh and Nathan's with their famous hot dogs. I got one with sauerkraut and mustard. It was too salty for my taste.

I have to say that the haze and fog added a nice element to the pictures, I have never seen Coney Island this way.

Ja es Nathan's, a hires hot dogos.

My husband is cooking tonight- green beans with tomato and potatoes

This recipe is one of grandmother Tessie's favorite. There are two things that our grandmothers have in common. First, they were great cooks and bakers. Secondly, they both had a given name (Natalia, Rozalia) and they did not use it at all.... they were known as Tessie and Zsuzsi. Go figure.

Egykunk sem tudja, mi tortent, mi okozta ezt a valtast.

Mostly Cloudy

I have to say the plants loved the constant rain. And I have to marvel at the beauty these plants create. Let the pictures speak to you!

Csodalom oket, es szeretnem megosztani ugyanezt a szepseget veletek!

A rainy day is good for baking buns

Yesterday I made a dough with yeast and a surprise ingredient, one tablespoon of ground allspice. The original recipe calls for cardamom, but my husband does care for it so I improvised.  After kneading, it needed to rise for about an hour and then I rolled it out, and filled it with two different types of fillings. The amount of dough was a lot for just the two of us. From this amount I made six sheets, three of them I filled with cinnamon-sugar-butter, three I filled with apricot jam. After the filling and slicing, (using a bread knife) they needed to rise again.  When placing them in the pan, leave some room between them, so they can expand. I let the slices rise in a pyrex for another hour, covered with a dry dishcloth. If you do not need as much as the recipe yields, then you can freeze the little rolls, and when you are ready to use them, just let them thaw overnight, and bake it the next morning for 15-18 minutes. You can spread some egg on the top and sprinkle it with sugar. I omitted these steps as the filling was sweet enough for me. There is also a suggestion in the recipe for icing if that is what you prefer.

Miutan megkelt a teszta, (jo sok lett) kigyurtam, megtoltottem es feltekertem.

Here is the the recipe, in full detail:  101 cookbooks thank you for inspiring me!
Itt talalhato a recept reszletesen: 101 cookbooks  ajanlom a tobbi receptet is!

Summer is peeking in....

I can definitely feel spring early in the morning when I water the plants outside and consider putting on a light sweater. In the evening when I go outside to have a last peek at the veggie garden, and I think to myself, "It is nippy here".  However, during the day summer is under foot and making the beautiful spring flowers lose their colors and  wither away.
I would like spring to last longer, but who am I kidding, this weather pattern has been going on for years now.  So I enjoy it while it lasts, and I am thankful for the beauty surrounding us.
This up coming week seems to be a cloudy rainy one... I hope these pictures from our garden cheer you up!

Ugy nez ki a jovo heten eleg borus esos ido lesz, ezzel a par keppel a kertunkbol szeretnem szeppe varazsolni az elkovetkezendo hetet!
